Review: Reckless King | A Kings of Rittenhouse Novel by Maya Hughes

RECKLESS KINGAn irresistibly steamy college sports romance.

Heath Taylor. Laid back. Easy going. Fastest guy on two skates and chill to a fault, at least that’s what they say. Until Kara.

Three nights together and I’m done for. Her laugh, her smile, the way my hand curves around her waist. She’s the one. Not a doubt in my mind…until I walk into my last class of the semester.

Kara, the woman of my dreams, is my new instructor. My hockey season and her career prospects are on the line. One false move–if anyone finds out–we’re both sunk.

On the ice I’m a beast that can’t be stopped, but thoughts of her are throwing me off my game. My fingers itch to feel her in my arms again. But risking everything could ruin what we’ve worked so hard for.

Life has a way of changing the best laid plans. And sometimes you can’t stay away no matter the promises you make…

Well oh my lanta have I mentioned how much I flipping adore all things Maya Hughes at this point? Seriously, amazing. Reckless King blew me away, I was hooked from start to finish, but to be fair I was hooked the moment I read the synopsis, I am a sucker for authority figure romances especially when it involves the woman being in the lead.

Kara and Health – yummy. Have I said that yet? Well they were yummy, in all angles they were perfectly scrumptious. Health is a fun character, he had this serious, intense presence about him yet he was sweet and caring. Something about that just made me swoon. That bro-code level of loyalty just put me in a tizzy of admiration for his character. On top of this, Kara is someone who just easy to fall in love with. Her personality was simple yet complex, intriguing yet rather boring – she was this typical, relatable female lead. I loved her gritty attitude, and just her all around everything was just down right amazing. I also can’t help to be able to relate to her on such a personal level, her writing thoughts down was just…. it tugged at the strings in my heart.

And these two together – wow. They had that chemistry that right off the bat they just had the IT thing. It was the most swoon worthy insta-lust scenario that deserved to be devoured. As a reader, many cases we complain about insta-lust and/or love scenarios because the romance has to be believable, for me, Health and Kara just had this connection that simply flowed together like a delicious, sexually scrumptious puzzle, one where I wanted to lick the pieces. Seriously, from the moment these characters met there was an intense respect, mutual attraction and above all, their dialogue matched their placement of their actions. It just flowed.

Something that I also enjoyed in Reckless King was that it was Health who was the student and Kara the authority figure, it added a certain level of yummy. Once that line was discovered, both characters tried to stay apart which only added into the intensity of their chemistry, the passion both characters had was melt of your seat good. The teaching one-on-one session with their knees grazing one another – GUSH ME MORE PLEASE! That green house scene – can we just fan me out right now please? PLEASE!

It wasn’t just the off the deep end delicious connection, I said it before and I will say it again, Kara was extremely relatable. The drama of her circle was extremely nudge your soul truth. It was like a mild case of ‘glass ceiling’ syndrome for women, and it played really well for Kara and her character development. I love characters like this, ones where there is such a real life issue and they create such a light, mild drama circling the situation where the character comes out even stronger than they were previously. Kara not once felt she was inferior (at least in my opinion) and by the end, choosing herself made her that much more empowering as a female lead.

Bottom line, I loved it. Health and Kara were divinely delicious, everything from their romantic entanglement developing, their struggles and to the point where they were just all encompassing romance that needed to just get that happy ending. I laughed, I swooned, everything I have come to enjoy from Maya Hughes is in Reckless King. It was the light, fun read I needed!

And man I cannot wait for Emmett. I have been pinning away for Emmett and Avery’s story since Shameless King, I need them, I want them – I will have them!
