Matthew Callahan has spent seven years struggling against the insatiable hunger for blood consuming him. Unable to stop the vampire inside from preying on humans, he keeps himself confined to a lonely existence.
Everything changes the night he is lured into a trap and taken prisoner by High Lord General Tarrick—a seductive incubus who feeds off sexual energy. Forced into the middle of a war between vampires and incubi, Matthew is used as a weapon against his own kind. Although he’s desperate for freedom, he is unable to deny the burning desire drawing him to the incubus general he now calls Master.

I always feel strange when I start up a new review, thinking to myself – what will get people to read this book? I mean honestly, what can I say…
Well for starters Captive fucking blew me away. The more and more I dive into Paranormal Romance the more I find myself deep in the rabbit hole, to be quite frank, I don’t think I want to ever escape. Jex Lane has completely beguiled me body and soul. Just within minutes of starting Captive I am entranced in an endless reading frenzy. The raw emotional grips that kept me turning each page was enough to send me in a tizzy. I needed more, and sleep is for the weak damnit!
Shimmer my timbers, Matthew has become one of my new favorite fictional characters. I know, I have a mountain of them, but honestly, Matthew had me in a choke-hold the minute I started Captive. The depth of his entire character had no bounds to his development. Where he was weak, he was mindful. Where he was failing, he still found the strength to succeed. And let me tell you, he took one hell of a beating. He had such an amazing presence throughout the novel that I cannot help but be drawn to his overall personality. And that mouth of his – half the time, when I wasn’t crying for him, I was laughing – no chuckling at the many comments that fell from his sexually invested mouth.
Not only was Matthew a tug for my soft spot, I fell hard for the delicious Tarrick. Though I was always on the fence with Tarrick even from the start, I still feel a type weakness for his character. The way he interacted with Mathew was both melt off your seat and questionable hesitation. Is he trustworthy, does he truly love or feel – is this all a game to him? It really bares down the question of everything surrounding his character while mixing with Matthew. The connection between these two is undeniably intense, but is it real?
And though I really, sinfully so, wish for Matthew to find his way back to Tarrick, I know things are not going to be that simple. Tarrick has wounded even my heart and honestly my heartstrings pull for only one fictional male today and oh my lanta does Matthew pull hard. Fingers crossed nonetheless that this isn’t the last tasteful dynamic I see between Tarrick and Matthew…
Obviously I could go on for hours about the romantic entanglements of Captive, because goryhell it was jaw dropping, beaver drool worthy every lustful word I read (because Tarrick and Matthew were perfection), but the romance isn’t even the full blown plot dynamic worth throwing around blissful word vomit. Want to know another reason that gets my goats about Paranormal Romances? The details. The overall backbone of fictional world is deliciously laid out for the reader, catastrophically engulfing, unforgettably intense and above all, beautifully presented.
The world building that Lane created was absolutely phenomenal. I could imagine this world that Matthew was painfully clashing through. I could almost taste it the writing style was so vivid in the descriptions. Not only that but each supporting character had a moment, a particular additive moment that just capitalized on the plot, building more and more webs for the reader that intertwined effortless.
Nothing overwhelming, not a moment of overshadowing nor useless interactions – everything and everyone had something that just helped everything build more.
I may or may not have just rambled incoherent review there but holy nuggets comrades I cannot stop gushing. I am already inhaling Sire, Jax Lane has slayed me. Between the world building, the character complexities, the dynamics – ugh I could just go on – it was mind blowing. Every moment left me breathless, even the sound of the music playing in my home could not drown out the sounds of my heart pounding against my chest as I followed Matthew in his journey of Captive.
Just perfection. Effortlessly perfect. If you are a fan of Paranormal Romance with a dark MM romance mixed with lust, deceit and angst feels then I highly recommend checking out this series! It was one of the best thus far recommended to me, so here I am passing on the favor to you – read it. Thank me later.
