Review: The Truth About Lies | The Truth Duet by Aly Martinez

Today we are celebrating the release of the first book in The Truth Duet by Aly Martinez. The Truth About Lies is now live and part of KindleUnlimited! The second title in the duet, The Truth About Us, will be releasing on September 13th! You can pre-order it from Amazon now.

Truth: From over a thousand miles away, I watched on the screen of my phone as two men murdered my wife. And I was helpless to save her.

Consumed by hate and rage, I spent four years running from my memories.

Until a shattered woman gave me a reason to stop.

Cora lived in a nightmare, but through sheer force of will, she’d turned it into something beautiful. She had a smile that could pierce the darkest soul. And with one glance, she shredded mine.

Lie: I was only there for a fresh start.

Lie: I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

Lie: There was nothing I could do to save her, either.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

I am obsessed comrades. Gosh I am completely and utterly beguiled by this woman. The Truth About Lies has me completely discombobulated. I exaggerate not my fellow furry friends. Aside from the fact that the synopsis gives us very little to expect in this novel, I go in blind – BLIND I SAY and I fucking loved it. Hopefully I can compile some coherent thoughts to process a valid review worth reading…

Right off the bat we are thrown into this world of the fictional characters that I now obsess over. My heart stopped, physically stopped as the scene evolved from Penn on the phone via video with his wife as two men break into her hotel and murder her. So already I am thrown into a cluster fuck of emotions because this scene alone still sends chills down my spine. Fast forward and now Penn is thirty-seven with what resemblance of a life he has, or rather as the reader what you think might be occurring because you don’t know until it actually happens. Penn is a full mystery to me in so many delicious ways.

And then we have the beautiful Cora, who is twenty-nine and isn’t a stranger to the dark side of the world. She is actually trapped in many ways both physically and emotionally yet in the midst of this, do not mistake her for inferior, Cora is anything but this. Cora is fierce, strong and damn amazing fictional female heroine. I was utterly blown away by her personality traits, a weaker woman would have crumbled and yet Cora lived, she was perfection.

Obviously we all want to know about the romance too, am I right? Whew. Cora and Penn together as their chemistry starts to develop took my breath away. It is almost an instant connection, something both were yearning for and at times, tries to stop this growing intensity between them, but it gets tossed aside. The passion between them – it is hard to find the words with how intensely beautiful it was without spoiling anything; it was just searingly enticing. Cora and Penn were their own world and it was amazing.

Aside from the romance aspect of Cora and Penn’s connection, I think what I most enjoyed was their actual backstory which played such a pivotal role in their chemistry. Both characters have this powerful grip on emotional devastation that it was almost deafening. My heart pounded for these characters.

Even without the romance as well, the puzzle pieces that is this drama filled maze of secrets was enough to get my blood pumping. The Truth About Lies is just a rollarcoaster of spider-webbed dynamics that had me guessing at each moment. I am pretty confident I don’t even really know what the hell just happened and comrades…. that is a good thing!

Overall, this was just one hell of a read. The emotional grip was overwhelming throughout, it was raw, gritty and above all, I could not put this novel down once I started. It was the perfect blend of complex character dynamics with actual character development that never ceased to amaze me. Penn and Cora were just all consuming towards my heart; they had such a powerful, intense personality that honestly it was hard not to relate on some spectrum, not to sympathize, not to swoon and be giddy as they were – as a reader you are engulfed.

It is just one of those perfect, slow burning builds that set you soaring until you are crashing down in a catastrophic whirlwind of emotions. Abso-fucking-lutely was this amazing, blew me away. Alright Aly Martinez, you have me in a choke hold, where is the next book damnit! I need it now!

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
