There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I’m coming for you…

Where Death leads, I follow. Nothing will stop me from my duty – not even the darkness that claims me. The Half-Fae’s music stirs a passion within me that I’ve never known. For her, I will break my vow of silence. For her…I will risk everything.

Recently I have been finding myself more and more in paranormal or fantasy types of romances. The backstory, the entire build of the world with the character dynamics that are intensely passionate have consumed me completely! So finding new authors is becoming quite an addiction. Case in point – Donna Grant’s Dark Alpha’s Hunger. With the synopsis, I was seriously gushing. The overall lore of the setup had my tingles blazing!

Though, I have to admit one factor before I dive head first in my gushing. The BIGGEST issue I had was that, yes I did see that this was a sort of series but I did not go back and read the prior books. I will also be completely honest with you comrades, there are snippets of connective perspectives at the jump plus throughout the plot building yet many points I still felt I was lacking backstory, lacking the character history. It did not entirely deter my overall enjoyment but I am telling you right now, I think it would have been even better if I had just read the first books in the series instead of jumping right into Dark Alpha’s Hunger.

Whew – had to get that off my chest! Now moving on…

Thea and Eoghan were a little bit of like and dislikes for me! I hate to say that too because I overall liked the personalities of both characters and their romance dynamic was just delicious. It mean honestly, there were points when I was sweating it was steam-filled hot! They just had an entertaining type of interaction that made me pinning to have more scenes of them together. But as a solo perspective I felt that at many times the characters had very little depths. More to the point slightly underdeveloped is the right train of thought I want to go with – they had this amazing chemistry, but as simply themselves, I was not connected to the story in the least.

Putting the characters aside, the aspects of the genre was definitely a huge backbone of the build for me. Not only was the romance a big point to the genre but the entirety of magic, politics and family drama that intertwined with the main characters really aided my enjoyment. There is such an astonishing world that Grant developed for this series that really grips the reader in such an intense way, you really feel like you are in the world.

Overall – I loved the romance, and I really enjoyed the world building for the fantasy/paranormal attributes, but the characters as individuals really lacked a level of depths I would have really liked to see more multilayered. There were also points of what felt like the dramatic climax becoming more and more rushed. But honestly, I really want to add more of Donna Grant to my TBR, I am thinking I might change my opinion a little more if I had more of the series under my belt!
