Review: Royal Bastard | Royals Undone Series by Nana Malone

ROYAL BASTARDLucas…

Don’t get in trouble, they said. Don’t cause an incident. Oops.

I might be a newfound prince, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to say goodbye to my days of freedom. So when my brother, the king, asks me to babysit a diplomat’s daughter, my first thought is to say no… that is until I see her climbing out of a window with her dress tucked into her thong.

She might just be my kind of girl.

I just thought I’d mix business with pleasure…I didn’t plan to lose control of my heart.

Bryna…

I’ve been groomed by my parents to climb the social ladder all my life and I’m done with it. I want nothing from their royal world. Now that I’m finally on my own, I can live where I want, date who I want, do who I want.

The one person I won’t be doing? My new accidental roommate.

Oh, he’s gorgeous and mysterious, and cheeky. He’s also friends with the king and a total jackass. So basically, he’s never gonna get it…famous last words.

Let me start by saying that I liked yet disliked Royal Bastard. I will also admit that this is my first Nana Malone novel ever and I definitely want to continue reading her work, I think maybe this just will not be my favorite.

So what did I like? Bryna and Lucas are two gems of personalities.

Lucas is definitely charming, entertainingly scrumptious. I have to admit that I liked him right at the start, it was something about how he carried himself, he was definitely guarded yet had this sensitive side. As the storyline starts to jump head first into the drama things start to slowly unravel about his past, one of which I am getting more and more curious about. Lucas is just an individual who had a troubling past yet is trying to get above it, trying to find a better life, safer life – bottom line I enjoyed his drive, his overall personality and passion.

Bryna is somewhat an enigma to me, if I am being honest. I liked her sass, her drive to be something other than her families legacy. She wants to be independent and I definitely respect that as female, she was a strong character – something I always love reading. But as much as I enjoyed her personality, her strength yet it was that same personality that irked me from time to time. At some point her confidence threaded on borderline annoying. She didn’t have this look down on individuals yet couldn’t separate herself from the conceitedness.

But I will say the chemistry had me swooning. Oh my lanta the chemistry between Bryna and Lucas was by far my favorite attributes of Royal Bastard. Between the bickering, the hilarious banter of these two shooting at one another was enough to fire up my loins, then when they actually started to get closer… Oh me oh my! Not only did they develop some sort of friendship but they had a delicious sexually connected chemistry.

Unfortunately in all the good I can share about this novel between the character’s personalities and their spectacular chemistry, there are a lot of things that are irking me. For me honestly, the plot was not my favorite. There are a lot of things going on between all the characters in the mix with the main characters, but unfortunately it was so much for me. On top of this it was slightly vague on many points. Once things started to really dive head first there seemed to be spots that didn’t match.

Obviously I cannot say more than that otherwise it will be total spoilers, but I really hope more comes into the puzzle because I really would hate to continue being confused.

On top of the mention of the dynamics of characters, a lot of the dislikes came from the secondary characters. Like at the beginning Lucas was told not to touch Bryna then he calls his brother to admit his feelings and then his brother accepts the feelings – like, why? Then Bryna’s parents, I get their angle because it really builds onto her backstory to breakaway from her parents’ powers yet every time they are present it just irks me how the dialogue and the scene plays out… I cannot grip the dynamic.

My hope is honestly continuing the series and seeing more development, growth possibilities between the dynamics of both the main characters since that is the main enjoyment I have for Royal Bastard at this time. Regardless of losing interest in the plot development, it is definitely Bryan and Lucas as a couple that spikes my happy place.
