A deliciously steamy enemies with benefits romance.
Declan McAvoy. Voted Biggest Flirt. Highest goal scorer in Kings of Rittenhouse Prep history.
Everyone’s impressed, well except one person…
After a blow out in high school, Makenna Halstead and I were happy to never have to cross paths again. Except life has a way of knocking you straight in the teeth with a puck when you least expect it. She hasn’t just returned to my life, she crashed into it like a wrecking ball…into my college kingdom, into my class, and smack dab into the seat next to mine. My new lab partner to be exact.
For years we hated each other… I may be King on the ice, but she is the Ice Queen. She has no problem calling me out, doesn’t back down, and her piercing blue eyes have me picturing more than than just my arms wrapped around her.
Now we’re stuck with each other and there’s no getting around that fact that we have to work together. My hockey career hangs in the balance. Problem? Oh, yeah.
I can’t deny it. I want her. More than I ever thought I could want a woman. I’ve got one semester–only four months–to convince her everything she thought about me was wrong.
Will my queen let me prove to her I’m the King she can’t live without?
Only one way to find out…

What do I enjoy in my romance genre? Oh skippy do I enjoy some sports romances. Why? I have no clue. Really I do not like sports in the least bit but nothing gets my goats hotter than reading some sports filled romance porn. Then you have an author who throws in one of my favorite tropes – enemies to friends with benefits – yes please and thank you.
For my first Maya Hughes book, this one really took the cake. The characters were enjoyable, the plot and development was beyond entertaining and the chemistry was beyond beaver drool worthy.
I loved Declan. I cannot help it. I love a jock with a asshole complex that is a closet sweetie. It isn’t just that I like a good jerk personality though, he really does have a great personality that I cannot help but swoon over. Declan has a lot of passions, he is passionate about his hockey career and though he does try to play the role of being the jock joke-ster he still knows when it is time to get serious. Makenna is definitely half half for me. I like her and I dislike her. Makenna has this great passionate, very driven personality about her that I cannot help but feel empowered by her, really enriching to see that in a female lead. However that same personality that I came to really adore also turned into slightly an annoyance for me. She sometimes acted too superior, not saying you should ever sale yourself short but in many ways she acted to the point of a stuck of bitch and not so much encompassing the female prowess I loved.
As the development of the chemistry progressed, Declan and Makenna started to find a mutual ground. One that was built on passing the class together, working together and on some level, becoming somewhat friends. There was also an attraction there that was never acted on until a certain point which turned rather explosive. Their witty banter, sarcastic comedic fun turned into a sexually entertaining page turner. When I wasn’t chuckling so hard from their conversations mid-thrust I was… dare I say turned on.
They just had a super fun chemistry dynamic. It was sexy, cute and adorable all at the same time.
One thing I would have liked to see a little more of, because I am not sure I understand the entire picture of their high school rivalry – there wasn’t much depth there. I mean, there was but there wasn’t. I can’t say without giving away some spoilage, but I get the factor that Makeanna was this Ice Queen, brain nerd girl with her nose stuck in a book or stuck up rather while Declan was the high school jock, flirt, pretty boy who gets what he wants. I liked that stereotypical scenario but I was hoping for a smidge more depth.
Overall can I admit right now that I am extremely excited about this series? Honestly, Shameless King really set the bar for what I should be expecting. Not only did I fall head over heels in love with Declan and Makenna, but I am super excited to see what is up next with the rest of the hockey team… perhaps Heath or Emmett. Please and thank you.
Seriously though, this was just a really enjoyable read. The dialogue and chemistry was witty, entertaining and steam-filled delicious of massive proportions. I still cannot get over their excuses for ‘research’ – honestly that made the entire novel amazing. The characters romance was believable as it progressed from one point to the next and honestly I couldn’t stop reading once I got started. Cannot wait to add more of Maya Hughes to my TBR… it is definitely happening.
