Review: Hooking Up | Shacking Up Series by Helena Hunting

HOOKING UPAmalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception ― but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of proclaiming his undying love, her husband can be heard, by Amalie and their guests, getting off with someone else. She has every reason to freak out, and in a moment of insanity, she throws herself at the first hot-blooded male she sees. But he’s not interested in becoming her revenge screw.

Mortified and desperate to escape the post-wedding drama, Amalie decides to go on her honeymoon alone, only to find the man who rejected her also heading to the same tiny island for work. But this time he isn’t holding back. She should know better than to sleep with someone she knows, but she can’t seem to resist him. They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical.

Filled with hilariously scandalous situations and enough sexual chemistry to power an airplane from New York City to the South Pacific, Hooking Up is the next standalone, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from Helena Hunting, the New York Timesbestselling author of the Pucked series and Shacking Up.

Oh my gosh was I waiting for this book! I mean can you blame me? Did you read the synopsis? I do love a good wedding drama with some rebound steam chemistry to activate the beaver drool dam.

Right off the bat, I am going to say there is very few things, if anything that I didn’t like like about Hooking Up. I loved the fast paced drama jump at the beginning. The dynamic between Armstrong and Amelie revealing he was a cheating scum to the hilarious moments in the changing room between Lex and Amelie directly after this incident. And the airport scene? HILARIOUS!

So really, at the start the drama was already set pretty high on the bar for this novel which I loved!

Secondly, and probably the most important part aside from the chemistry factor we still need to dive in, I loved the characters. They personalities, their overall dynamic was great. Amelie is definitely amazeballs – I loved that even though she got kicked down, she scoots out and enjoys herself to regroup. She is smart, fun, and she doesn’t allow herself to be slowed down. And don’t think she didn’t have the feels either, she had her moments of ‘oh my gosh – what the fuck should I do now’ but honestly it made her seem believable, she was human. Lex on the other hand was just yummy. Head to toe lickable like a lollipop and I wanted to find out how many licks to get to the center…

Seriously though, he had this possessive, protective personality that I enjoyed, but also knew how to be a fun guy, take things as they are and evolve with the punches. I cannot gush enough about him; and honestly most of it was because of how he handled the relationship between him and Amelie. He was the backbone she needed when she needed it, he was the hero – total knight and shining armor. It wasn’t overplayed broody man meat coming to the rescue the damsel to pick up the pieces kind of hero, but just the guy who was a respectful friend, there is an attraction but when things are rough he is that shoulder. Definitely someone you would want in your corner.

And speaking of that chemistry…. muy caliente. Though they keep things secret for a while and try to deny their feelings or their chemistry, it really just melts off your eyes as you read them in the same room together. They just connected on such a emotional and physical connection that evolved into something really spectacular.

Overall – I LOVED THIS. Hooking Up definitely capitalized on everything that I enjoy about Helena Hunting’s books – she has just a entertaining dynamic she adds to her romance novels, whether it is the drama, angst, romance, or the hilarious antics, I have yet to read anything from this woman that hasn’t met my expectations. Laughing until I am crying, swooning until I am drooling, and crying until I am smiling. She is just great. At this point I will have to admit that Hooking Up is my favorite in this current series; I loved Amalie and Lex. They were this perfect blend of entertaining, romance and all things nice – I need more damnit.
